sunsweet ones

So one of the things that really angered me recently was a commercial I happened to see about Sunsweet Ones. Sunsweet ones are individually wrapped prunes. Here is the link to a video of it, unfortunately I couldn't find the English version, but that one is just as clear. I don't understand what was wrong with the way prunes were packaged before and why is there a need to have them individually, so you can throw them into your bag? With all the talk nowadays about sustainability, and not wasting, and recycling. In a time when plastic bags are illegal in California and bottled water is illegal in Toronto, how can a company release a product such as that? All the excess plastic now, that is more than likely not recyclable because it isn't made from type 1 or type 2 plastic, is destined to just end up in garbage cans and ultimately in the landfills. Not to mention, all the extra costs that the company now spends on buying the plastic to package those prunes individually, the increased transportation that is used as the plastic is delivered to the company to make the packaging, and all of the other externalities that are not factored into the price of those prunes. Is there really a need for individually wrapped prunes? And if so, was it not possible to find a better way to package them so that it would be done in a sustainable manner? any ideas?

I'm pretty sure that the idividual fruit pieces is part of a movement to get kids and those folks who would ordinarily reach for a piece of candy to eat a piece of fruit instead.
Other than the small plastic bag, do you have any other objection?

I personally love prunes. The packaging is just absurd, i don't believe that the problem with prunes was the packaging, if they wanted to start a movement to get people to reach for prunes instead of candy, then perhaps rebranding the notion of prunes and figuring out other ways to target people would have been a better example. For instance, even though im not a fan of the subway apple packages because i feel people should just eat the apple, but it is very successful in terms of competing with a pack of chips. If packaging was already the target why not just package prunes like chips, why was there a need to package them individually? thanks for your comment :)

I just saw the commercial and I immediately came online to the blogs to say that I would not buy this product just because they are not what I call a GREEN company. This company is not thinking of their carbon footprint. Plastic will never Bio-degrade. Meaning we are just making plastic and it never leaves the earth. Never! The only thing we can do is recycle. I don't have a problem with the fact that the bottle is plastic b/c most people will recycle that curbside, b/c it's easy. But I do have a problem with the little individual plastic bags the prunes are wrapped in. Most likely they are going to end up in garbage cans/landfills creating emissions OR littered which then goes into the stream ways... which goes out the ocean. There are 7 million tons of plastic in the ocean at this time. Birds and fish are eating the plastic. To see more view on it here is a good video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnUjTHB1lvM

This company is an example of a non-green company in my opinion. I would not support this company unless they stop the use of individual plastic wrappers! If they must make it individual then they should use something else such as wax paper, etc. I don't believe in excuses anymore from companies and you shouldn't either.

How big is your carbon footprint? Make a change one day at a time.

Peace, Love, Recycle
